TROOP 121
J. CLIFFORD JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCOUT OF THE YEAR AWARD
Revision E, February 1, 2000

Johnson points are awarded for various things throughout the year, and the scouts with the
highest scores are recognized at the end of the scouting year. Below is a list of ways that points
are earned.

A.
       Uniform Inspection – 3 points per meeting at which the Scout wears properly, (if applicable), or
has in his possession each of the following items:

1.        Official BSA uniform shirt.
2.        Official BSA uniform trousers or shorts.
3.        Official BSA uniform belt.
4.        Central New Jersey Council Strip.
5.        Troop 121 Numerals.
6.        Current Rank patch.
7.        Patrol Emblem or equivalent.
8.        Neckerchief or Bolo Tie.
9.        Dues.
10.      Official Boy Scout Handbook.
11.      Patrol Flag or equivalent, (Patrol Leader responsibility).
12.      Patrol Notebook or equivalent, (Patrol Leader responsibility).
13.      Official BSA socks.
14.      Official BSA hat or Troop 121 hat.

B.        Recruiting – 300 points, (see Note IV-A).

C.        Advancements:

1.        Merit Badges – 40 points, (see Note IV-A).
2.        Religious Emblem – 400 points, (see Note IV-A).
3.        Special Awards, (See Notes IV-A and X):
4.        Rank, (see Note IV-B):

a.        Scout – 50 Points.
b.        Tenderfoot – 125 points.
c.        Second Class – 200 points.
d.        First Class – 300 points.
e.        Star – 400 points.
f.         Life – 550 points.
g.        Eagle – 750 points.
h.        Eagle Palms – 250 points.

D.       Activities – 25 points per day, (a day is any part of a calendar day of an event when dues               
are not  collected.)

E.        Fund Raising:

1.        Activity – 20 points per hour, (see Note VIII).
2.        Sales – point amount set by the Patrol Leaders Council, (see Note IX).

F.       Service – 50 points per hour, (see Note VIII).

Notes:

II.        Points are earned during a 1-year period beginning on the 1st of February.
III.       Recognition and presentation of the award is during the annual troop banquet in February.
IV.      Avancement points are effective as follows:
A.        Merit Badges and Special Awards – the date when the counselor signs the application.
B.        Rank – the date of the Board of Review.
V.       Recruiting points are effective on the date when the new Scout turns in all of his paperwork and
notifies the Scoutmaster that he is joining the troop at the invitation of a specific Scout or group of
Scouts.
VI.      Changes to these requirements must be approved by the Troop Committee.  All changes take
effect on the 1st of February following their approval.  Suggestions are welcome.
VII.     The Scoutmaster has exclusive interpretative authority.
VIII.    For activity based fundraisers and service projects, points will be given on a per hour basis.
These activities must be approved by the Scoutmaster in advance and be available to all members
of the troop in order to qualify.
IX.     For sales type fundraisers, the Patrol Leaders Council will establish a standard.  Any Scout who
meets that standard will be awarded the allotted number of points as decided by the Patrol
Leaders Council.
X.     There are three categories for the number of points designated to each special award earned by a
Scout.  The points will be awarded when the completion form, certificate, or application has been
signed. For more details on the awards below, see

A.     Group 1:        (500 points)
1.        100 Days and Nights Camping Award.
2.        Hornaday Award.
3.        National Court of Honor Lifesaving and Meritorious Awards.

B.     Group2:        (250 points)                                                                           
1.        Mile swim.
2.        Den Chief Award.
3.        BSA Lifeguard.
4.        Interpreter Award.
5.        World Conservation Award.
6.        50 Miler.
7.        Leave-No-Trace Camping Award.
8.        Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award.
9.        Historic Trails Award.

C.     Group 3:        (100 points)
1.        Snorkeling BSA
2.        Firem’n Chit.
3.        Totin Chip.
